Tetragon

Last heard at Outpost in November 2007, Tetragon also performed at the inaugural New Mexico Jazz Festival in 2006 and has also appeared at the Albuquerque Museum Amphitheater and the Telluride Foundation’s “Family Fiesta” concert in Mountain Village, CO. pharoah

Friday, July 18, 7:30pm
Pharoah Sanders
The Lensic Performing Arts Center
Sponsored by 98.1 Radio Free Santa Fe
Pharoah Sanders possesses one of the most distinctive tenor saxophone sounds in jazz. Harmonically rich and heavy with overtones, his sound can be as raw as it is graceful. Pharoah Sanders burst through the gates in John Coltrane’s group in the mid 1960’s and at 68, he’s still going strong. In the decades after his first recordings with Coltrane, Sanders developed the capability of playing convincingly in a variety of contexts, from free to mainstream, and as a mature artist he has discovered a hard-edged lyricism that has served him well. “It’s a rare artist who can overcome the transitory nature of organized sound to make a song truly resonate within the human heart. Pharoah Sanders is one of the chosen few whose music still can affect listeners long after the coda has drifted off and the house lights have come up.” Peter Koht. Pharoah Sanders will be accompanied by his long-time rhythm section of William Henderson, piano; Nat Reeves, bass; and Joe Farnsworth, drums.

toussaint

Saturday, July 19, 6-10:30pm
Allen Toussaint
Albuquerque Summerfest
Harry E. Kinney Civic Plaza

Sponsored by Mesa del Sol
Allen Toussaint is one of America’s greatest musical treasures. Singer, pianist, songwriter, arranger and producer, the New Orleans native has been making hit records for over forty years. His massive influence on American music reaches deep into the idioms of rhythm and blues, pop, country, musical theater, blues and jazz. He played an essential role in developing the sound of New Orleans–a sound that eventually brought artists like Dr. John, The Band and the Rolling Stones to a world-wide audience. Inducted into the 1998 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, some of Toussaint’s best known hits include Ernie K-Doe’s “Mother-in-Law;” “Fortune Teller,” recorded by both Benny Spellman and The Rolling Stones; the Lee Dorsey hit “Working in the Coal Mine”, also recorded by Devo and The Judds; and the Grammy-nominated “Southern Nights,” recorded by Glen Campbell, which received BMI’s “The Most Performed Song of the Year” in 1977 and won the Country Music Association’s “Song of the Year.” More recently, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Toussaint collaborated with Elvis Costello in a recording entitled, The River in Reverse. A dedication to the rebuilding and return of New Orleans, Toussaint and Costello did a nationwide tour in support of the CD. Allen Toussaint will be performing tonight with his quintet which features Brian “Breeze” Cayolle, saxophone; Anthony Brown, guitar; Chris Severin, bass; and Herman LeBeaux, drums.

Also performing on Civic Plaza tonight is one of New Mexico’s finest soul divas, Hillary Smith with Hip Pocket; young hip hop, soul & R&B vocalist from Santa Fe by way of Brooklyn, NY, Paul Rivers Bailey and his band, Human Family; from Ghana, Laryea Addy and his Albuquerque-based Ni Lee Gbe African Drum & Dance Ensemble; and Albuquerque's unique Concepto Tambor.

Straight Up honoring Arlen Asher
Bert Dalton Trio honoring Chris Calloway
The Lensic Performing Arts Center

Multiwoodwind maestro,Arlen Asher is one of New Mexico’s longstanding jazz luminaries. Born in 1929 in a small farming community in Missouri, Asher moved to Albuquerque in 1958. Prior to becoming a full time musician, Asher worked as an award-winning producer and announcer for KNME-TV, KOB-TV and KHFM radio. He left broadcasting to establish a private woodwind studio in 1965 teaching woodwind fundamentals and jazz improvisation, ever since, to hundreds of students throughout the US. In the 1970’s, he formed the Arlen Asher-Bob Brown Quartet, which formed the basis of two jazz television series for KNME-TV and a series of concerts that included guest artists such as trumpeter Clark Terry. In 1994, Arlen Asher joined drummer, John Trentacosta’s group, Straight Up, playing with them ever since. Asher has appeared on numerous CD’s including his own 2002 release, Another Spring, featuring a virtual Who’s Who of New Mexico jazz talent. He also appears on Straight Up’s recording Live Jazz in the Desert, a top-selling local jazz CD in New Mexico. Straight Up has appeared at many jazz festivals, including the Tucson and Sedona Jazz Festivals and Jazz In The Sangres in Colorado. At 79, Arlen Asher remains active as a performer as well as hosting “The Jazz Experience” broadcast every Tuesday morning on Santa Fe Public Radio station, KSFR. Along with Arlen Asher, woodwinds; Straight Up features leader, John Trentacosta, drums, NY trumpeter Michael Morreale; Bob Fox,

calloway

Chris Calloway is a singer, an actor, a television personality, a producer, and a band-leader. She is the daughter of the famous Cotton Club bandleader and international icon Cab Calloway and is heir to that American musical legacy. With an introduction by her father, 30 years ago, she began her career on the Ed Sullivan show. For 20 years, until his death in 1995, she performed worldwide in the finest clubs and concert halls with Cab Calloway and his Hi De Ho Orchestra. Her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, took her around the world and finally to Santa Fe at the Santa Fe Stages International Theatre Festival. In 1999 she re-formed The Hi De Ho Orchestra for the JVC Jazz Festival which led to a 55-city Cab Calloway’s Legacy of Swing big band tour. Returning to Santa Fe in 2001 she wrote and starred in a one woman show entitled Clouds of Joy about her Aunt Blanche Calloway, the only known black female to front (in 1931!) an “all male” band.Chris Calloway will be accompanied tonight, as she often is these days, by The Bert Dalton Trio one of Santa Fe’s finest groups comprising pianist Bert Dalton; bassist Rob “Milo” Jaramillo; and drummer John Bartlit.

garrett

Wednesday & Thursday, July 23 & 24, 7:30pm
KENNY GARRETT QUARTET
Outpost Performance Space

Sponsored by Mesa del Sol & Southwest Gastroenterology Associates, PC
One of the most influential jazz artists of his generation, alto and soprano saxophone titan Kenny Garrett has been a major force in jazz since his first appearances as a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers as well as Miles Davis’ band nearly twenty years ago. As one of the last great musicians to work his way up the ranks in the bands of other great musicians, Garrett attributes much of his success to his work with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Mel Lewis Orchestra and Dannie Richmond Quintet as well as with artists like Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw and of course, Miles Davis. Garrett joined Miles Davis' last touring band in 1986 and played and recorded with Davis for five years, but he cites John Coltrane as having the most influence on his artistry. Garrett has released numerous acclaimed recordings and has received multiple Grammy nominations. A frequent critics' and readers' poll winner, most of his work is in modern mainstream idioms, but he is an eclectic artist having experimented with fusion and hip hop as well as performing with the New Jersey Symphony, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Pharoah Sanders, John Scofield, and Pat Metheny. Appearing with Garrett at this year’s festival is his latest touring group featuring the young talents of Hammond B-3 organist, Corey Henry; electric bassist, Lenny Stallworth; and drummer Justin Brown. Focusing on his funk roots, Garrett’s current band is “incredibly youthful…armed with impressive technique…coiled excitement in the extreme.”

habib

Friday, July 25, 2008 - 7:30pm
Habib KoitÉ & Bamada
The Lensic Performing Arts Center
sponsored by blu102.9
We just learned that Youssou N'Dour has cancelled his U.S Tour and therefore will not be performing for the Jazz festival as planned. We are pleased to announce however that Malian guitarist and vocalist, Habib Koité, one of Africa's most beloved and popular musicians will perform the same night instead! Called "Mali's biggest pop star" by Rolling Stone (in an infamous article in which Bonnie Raitt compared him to Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn), Habib Koité has received raves from publications such as People, Entertainment Weekly and the New York Times and his charisma and magnetism translates across cultures. A descendant from a line of griots (traditional African troubadors), Koité draws on musical styles from the different regions of Mali and has gained a strong fan base by integrating rock and folk sounds of the Western world without watering down his Malian roots. Koite’s critically acclaimed 2001 release, Baro, was recently followed up in September 2007 with his release, Afriki, which features his band, Bamada, with whom he will be performing at the Jazz Festival. Afriki means "Africa" in the Malian Bambara language and refers to the strengths and challenges of the African continent. Koité is transposing his role of modern-day griot into a facilitator who is helping his fellow Africans survive in the Western-dominated, industrialized world. Besides Habib Koité on vocals and guitar, Bamada features Boubacar Sidibe, guitar, vocals, harmonica; Kélétigui Diabate, balafon, violin; Abdoul Wahab Berthe, bass, kamale n'goni, vocals; Mahamadou Kone, percussion (tama, dum dum); SouleymaneAnn, drums, vocals, calabash.

For the majority of her twenty-plus years as a performing artist, she has defied categorization and convention. Her rich vocal timbre and tone is the thread that weaves all of these influences together. Ms. Wilson has won numerous awards in recognition of her work, including the Downbeat Reader’s Poll for Best Female Vocalist, the Montreal International Jazz Festival Miles Davis Prix Award and a Grammy in 2001. Preservation Hall Jazz Band
The Lensic Performing Arts Center
Sponsored by Verve Gallery of Photography
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band derives its name from Preservation Hall, the venerable music venue located in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter and founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe. The band has been referred to by one music critic as “a bridge across the ages — a link between the present day and the heyday of traditional New Orleans music.” It is the mission of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to preserve this joyful and timeless music that evolved in New Orleans around the turn of the century by bringing the music to contemporary audiences worldwide. Some of the creators of this style of music are still with the ensemble and the current band includes musicians who range in age from 29 to 88. The band, which has toured consistently since 1963, is currently performing worldwide, making new recordings, developing new collaborations and perhaps carrying an even sharper mandate of cultural preservation as a result of Hurricane Katrina. “The band had drive, and funk, and, believe it or not, youth!” (The New York Times). The Preservation Hall Jazz Band comprises a rotating group of about a dozen musicians. On this tour the band is: Mark Braud, trumpet & vocals; Clint Maegden, vocals; Elliott “Stackman” Callier, reeds; Frederick Lonzo, trombone; Rickie Monie, piano; Walter Payton, bass & vocals; and Joseph Lastie Jr., drums.

kanoa

A cross-cultural blend of jazz harmonies with Afro-Cuban rhythms and a taste of mbira and African drumming, Perceptions is led by Kanoa Kaluhiwa, one of Albuquerque’s finest saxophonists. The repertoire features originals by Kaluhiwa plus arrangements of other jazz not-so-standards. The ensemble features Kanoa Kaluhiwa on saxophone, mbira and percussion; César Bauvallet, trombone and congas; John Rangel, keyboards; Colin Deuble, electric and upright bass; Alyson Steinman, African drums and mbira; Heidi Alina, djembe; and Tomás White, drums and percussion.

le chat

Le Chat Lunatique plays a combination of Gypsy Swing, Western Swing and as they put it, “anything else we damn well please …Filthy, Mangy Jazz is our forte!” The project grew out of guitarist, John Sandlin and violinist, Muni Kulasinghe’s love for the great Hot Club of France, a gypsy swing group from 1940’s Paris, which included the combined genius of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli. Bassist, Jared Putnam’s western swing background then fused itself into the mix as well. Finally, drummer Fernando Garavito’s (from Colombia) adds a latin aspect to the groove. Le Chat Lunatique’s new CD, Demonic Lovely, released in February 2008, was nominated for SEVEN New Mexico Music Awards. Le Chat was voted “Best Band Over-All” and “Best Jazz Act” in the Weekly Alibi’s 2008 Best of Burque issue AND “Best Local Band” and “Best Jazz Act” in the Local iQ’s 2008 Smart List. They have opened for Asleep at the Wheel, The Hot Club of  San Francisco, and The Djangomatics. They recently composed and performed the music for a new play called Flamingo/Winnebago which was premiered in Philadelphia. In October 2007, John Sandlin organized the 2nd Annual New Mexico Django Fest which met with widespread acclaim. FREE!

Cathryn McGill is a favorite featured singer/songwriter in the Southwest. She has shared the stage with major artists such as Lyle Lovett, the late Grover Washington, Jr. and Bo Diddley among others. Stylistically she is influenced by Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Roberta Flack and Betty Carter, but her unique style has been described by one reviewer as “electrifying, gospel-cooked jazz and blues.” McGill has deep roots in the gospel tradition having grown up singing in church choirs in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Today she performs in churches and nightclub and concert venues all over the state. She is currently writing songs and is planning a major CD entitled I’m On My Way to be released in the fall of 2008 and featuring original gospel flavored inspirational music. The quartet tonight features Stu MacAskie, keyboard; Dimi Disanti, guitar; Justin Bransford, bass; and Arnaldo Acosta, drums.  FREE!
