Since moving to New Mexico in 1980, Michael Anthony has been one of the most respected and sought after guitarists on the scene. A native of Los Angeles, his credits include touring with Andy Williams, Henry Mancini, and Michele Legrand, among others, and a long tenure with the orchestras of The Carol Burnett Show, and The Flintstones. He also played on network television shows by Barbara Streisand, Dean Martin, and Sonny and Cher. Anthony spent fifteen years working in recording studios and playing jazz with artists including Blue Mitchell, Herbie Laws, the Bobby Bryant Orchestra, the Louie Belson Orchestra, Quincy Jones and many others. He also played with the Gil Evans Orchestra accompanying Miles Davis at the Monterey Jazz Festival. He has released seven CDs of his own. Referred to as “the Dean of New Mexico Jazz guitarists,” he applies his talent and experience as an educator in classes and workshops at both the secondary and university levels, heading up jazz guitar studies at the University of New Mexico. Recently retired after 15 years, from David “Mr. O” Ostrowitz’s renowned Manzano High School guitar program, Michael Anthony, or “Uncle Mike” as he is known by some, will be joined in this concert by two of his outstanding students of years past— John Maestas and Claudio Tolousse Pérez. They will be accompanied by two of New Mexico’s finest working rhythm section mates, Michael Glynn, bass; and Cal Haines, drums as well as being joined for part of the evening by another young up-and-coming musician in the community, bassist Marren Hatch.
