This year’s spectacular Nob Hill Summerfest event is destined to outdo last year’s amazing debut. It runs from 2pm-10:30pm and features 3 stages on Central (at Girard, at Washington, and the Cork & Tap at Montclaire), 25 acts, and 75 of the finest local musicians. Headlining the evening at 9:00pm, on the main stage at Girard and Central, is Maceo Parker, a legend whose name is synonymous with Funky Music. Maceo!! (you know that name from all the times you heard James Brown ask for his funky assistance) has been called “the living, breathing pulse which connects the history of Funk in one golden thread–the cipher which unravels dance music down to its core.” A funk and jazz saxophonist, Parker is best known for his work with James Brown in the 60s, as well as George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic in the 70s. For the past sixteen years, Parker has been building a new funk empire, navigating between Brown’s 60’s soul and Clinton’s 70’s freaky funk while also exploring mellower jazz and the grooves of hip-hop. He has performed or recorded over the years with Ray Charles, Ani Difranco, James Taylor, De La Soul, Dave Matthews Band and the Red Hot Chili Peppers and has released several CDs of his own, including his groundbreaking Life on Planet Groove. His timeless sound has garnered him a new young fan base with his catch phrase being, “2% Jazz, 98% Funky Stuff,” and his 8 piece band with whom he performs tonight has been called “the tightest little funk orchestra on earth.”
