Tonight “the First Family of Cool” comes to the Lensic stage. Jazz guitarist, vocalist and bandleader John Pizzarelli is known internationally for his swinging interpretations of jazz standards, as well as for his own songs, which have achieved a modern “standard” status in their own right. He is among the premier contemporary interpreters of the great American songbook, to which he brings his signature style and brilliant guitar playing, following in the tradition of his father, guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli. He has released over 21 of his own recordings and been a special guest on recordings for major pop stars such as James Taylor, Natalie Cole, and Rickie Lee Jones, as well as leading jazz artists like Rosemary Clooney, Harry Allen and his father. A veteran radio personality, Pizzarelli launched Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli, a nationally syndicated radio program co-hosted with his wife, singer, actress Jessica Molaskey, a veteran of a dozen Broadway shows including A Man of No Importance, Les Miserables, City of Angels, Cats, and Oklahoma! and who will perform with him tonight. She has performed Off Broadway and regionally and has premiered music written by Ricky Ian Gordon, Adam Guettel, Jason Robert Brown, Michael John LaChiusa, Stephen Sondheim and John Bucchino. A songwriter in her own right, she has released five critically acclaimed CDs.
For more than six decades, the now 85 year old Bucky Pizzarelli has been a fixture in jazz. The list of big bands and vocalists with whom he has performed and recorded reads like a Who’s Who of Jazz. One of the era’s most solid rhythm players, Pizzarelli played and toured with Benny Goodman, Zoot Sims, Bud Freeman, and Stephane Grappelli, and later recorded with George Van Eps, Carl Kress and George Barnes. His superior mastery of the seven-string guitar is unparalleled and his very personal style sets him apart from all others.
