Tuesday, July 13, 7:30pm Presented in partnership with Santa Fe Bandstand and Outside In
The Things That Are Heard originated as “a project to celebrate my 50th birthday,” says Santa Fe drummer, Dave Wayne. “Basically, I wanted to write some of my own music and organize a large group to play it.” Not really jazz, not really rock, but somewhere in between, Wayne builds the music around bass lines, rhythm, & melody leaving the harmonic aspects up to the players’ discretion. His music is influenced by Frank Zappa, The Meters, Miles Davis, Sun Ra and Ornette Coleman, as well as the music of Africa and Eastern Europe. Besides Wayne’s compositions, the group also plays original tunes by the other band members: Paul Bossert, trombone; Dan Pearlman, cornet; Ross Hamlin and Sean Buckley, electric guitars; Casey Anderson, bass; Elliot Ryan, percussion; & Dave Wayne, drums.
Le Chat Lunatique plays a combination of Gypsy Swing, Western Swing and, as they put it, “…. Filthy, Mangy Jazz!” The project grew out of guitarist, John Sandlin and violinist/vocalist, Muni Kulasinghe’s love for the great Hot Club of France, a gypsy swing group from 1940s Paris, which brought together the geniuses of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli. Bassist, Jared Putnam’s western swing background adds another range of classic tunes to their repertoire, while drummer Fernando Garavito’s brings his latin background to the rhythmic palette. Their debut CD, Demonic Lovely (2008) was nominated for seven New Mexico Music Awards. They have opened for Asleep at the Wheel, The Hot Club of San Francisco and The Djangomatics and they composed and performed the music for Flamingo/Winnebago, a theatre piece which premiered in Philadelphia in 2007.
