Continuing a New Mexico Jazz Festival tradition since its inception in 2006, A.B. Spellman , the highly respected retired National Endowment for the Arts Deputy Chairman (for whom, in 2005, the NEA named one of its prestigious Jazz Masters awards the “A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Masters Award for Jazz Advocacy”), jazz historian (Four Lives in the Bebop Business and Art Tatum: A Critical Biography) and poet (The Beautiful Days, and Things I Must Have Known) will conduct a meet the artist session with this year’s jazz festival NEA Jazz Master, Randy Weston. Mr. Weston and Mr. Spellman will be joined by Weston’s autobiography collaborator Willard Jenkins, an independent arts consultant, producer, educator and broadcast journalist, whose writing has been featured in JazzTimes, Downbeat, All About Jazz and many other publications. In addition to this lively three-way discussion, the event will also feature a book signing for African Rhythms (Duke University Press) Mr Weston’s recently published, as-told-to-Willard Jenkins autobiography (as they put it, “composed by Randy Weston/arranged by Willard Jenkins”).
